Ratification

December 9th, 2007

So, this hasn’t really been documented very well, so I’ve pulled some previous posts and thought I’d redo them with a bit of context for the whole thing.

So, Slaughterhaus Five (which is London nightclub a club I’m a managing partner in) did an event called “Ratification”. This sprang from the seeds of discontent with the fact that Gordon Brown is now the unelected ruler of the UK, and we wanted to do something to sort of complain about it. So we decided to do an election of our own.

As you know, Slaughterhaus Five is set in a sort of dystopian, orwellian parallel universe, where a military industrial complex is all powerful and one of the mottoes of the state is “Weapons, Not Food”. We produced three short films for the campaign, which form a sort of basic story arc. For me it was a big and exciting challenge – writing, along with my business partner Chris De Bie (aka Chris Damage) , a rough script and getting people in to shoot for it. The whole thing involved building a green screen in my basement, creating a makeshift lighting rig, lots of late nights and mixing bisto and ribena to make fake blood. I’m hoping that if I do enough of these, I might actually get good enough at making films that someone might pay me for it, someday.

We also partnered with NO2ID to distribute their material and try to drive membership signups. Everyone recieved a NO2ID info pack on the night, containing a badge, a membership form, and a booklet on how to win in an argument over ID cards.

The films are best watched in sequence:

We wanted it to span the range between funny, satirical and actually disturbing. I’m not sure whether it succeeds at that, but it was a fun project all the same, and I was pretty amazed at the performances we got out of all the cast – none of whom were actors. It was all shot on DV and edited in premiere and after effects, for a budget of less than £200 (and that’s counting the green screen).

In the end, the night was a total success. The event was held on the same night as the Russian Election (which was probably slightly more free than ours, but only just). We filled the club to capacity, and I think we really turned a corner getting NO2ID involved.
As part of the performance, everyone was asked to vote, and be photographed with their ballot. You can see the full gallery of voters, and who they voted for, here…

Flash on the Beach 2007

November 9th, 2007

Wow. Flash on the beach was really, really incredible this year. I was there with some colleagues and lucky enough to work for a company who could afford to send me for all three days, and I have to tell you, I don’t know how they could have made it any better than they did. We’re talking AMAZING speakers, evening entertainment, parties, a hugely diverse and eclectic set of people there, beautiful weather (mostly)… It was like the best holiday ever!

Personally, I thought Josh Davis really nailed his talk about being an artist and working in flash, Robert Hodgin’s stuff was just totally mindblowing – especially the magnetosphere audio reactive visualisations. Eric Natzke was really inspiring, talking about his work – which is very much rooted in painting. Grant Skinner did an excellent technical talk on AS3 which I’m pretty sure everyone in the audience learned at least 3 new things from (I learned a lot, and I consider myself reasonably ahead of the curve). Adobe were nice enough to put a load of their senior guys on stage to endure our criticism and verbal abuse, and were surprisingly receptive of the feedback.

And the final talk of the conference, the mighty Jared Tarbell talking about his work. For me this was really incredible, as he’s been a big influence on me for a long time.

I’d gush some more but I’ve got to get back to work…

China Now

China Now

I’ve just finished a flash build for China Now, which is a festival aimed at promoting Chinese culture in the UK. There’s a nifty drop down menu and a shiny apple-dock style homepage. Completed on time, with a minimum of fuss.

More video flyers…

July 2nd, 2007

Here’s the second half of the Slaughterhaus 5 launch campaign. These ones are a bit more well produced, I think. (although obviously still pretty amateurish by Soho/Hoxton standards…:p )

Making videos is so much fun! No writing code, debugging, or any of that stressful crap. And once it’s done, it’s done. Awesome.

The cool thing about this whole “video flyers” idea is that they’re much more effective than regular paper flyers, don’t require physical distribution, and are actually less expensive when you factor in printing costs. Of course, once we start doing location shoots, and hiring Christopher Walken to do guest appearances that might change… :)

Alias…Directing?

June 2nd, 2007

So I’ve actually had some spare(ish) time lately, and I’ve been wanting to expand my skills a bit – so I thought I’d have a go at directing some short promo videos. A club I VJ at, Strength Through Joy, is rebranding and moving to a new venue (and, ahem, making me a partner :) ), and they wanted to do a campaign to reflect this. Here’s the first two videos:

LFPUG talk source files

February 23rd, 2007

Well, the talk went well last night (apart from the venue being double booked with a pole dancing class) – we had a good turnout, and people seemed to enjoy the presentation.

I’ll do fire next time, I promise…

So – first off, new work up on FINITESTATEAUTOMATA.ORG

And here’s the source code:

Feel free to post questions to the OSFlash mailing list, if I can help I will.

Video should be up on LFPUG soon too.

Thanks for coming everyone!

LFPUG talk, Feb 22nd

February 13th, 2007

So, I’m doing a talk at the LFPUG on the 22nd February. That’s in about a week…

If you don’t go, I promise not to hold it against you and secretly hate you for years, or add your name to my “people to kill” list.

Promise.

Wordpress – Meet deepest sender

December 24th, 2006

Another reason for the lack of posts lately has been the fact that I spend most of my time on Livejournal these days. However, it seems that Deepest Sender now supports wordpress, so I can post much more easily!

Yay!
